james hook lobster company

Friday, May 30th, 2008

For over two decades my parents have been getting lobster from the James Hook Lobster Company in Boston. The lobsters are always fresh, the shipping fees are reasonable and we've never been disappointed.

Sadly, the James Hook Lobster Company burned to the ground this morning in Boston. The company, which has been around for almost 100 years, was a Boston landmark and I hope they get back on their feet very soon.

jeni's ice creams

Thursday, May 29th, 2008

In 2006 Daily Candy wrote about Jeni's Ice Creams located in Ohio. The list of interesting flavors caught my attention: organic dark cocoa gelato, Thai chili, candied beet with mascarpone, salty caramel… yum. All of them are made in small batches with all-natural ingredients.

My dad's big on ice cream, so I sent him the signature nine package, which includes those listed above, plus others like black coffee, queen city cayenne and a pear riesling sorbet. He absolutely loved it.

thethirdofjune.com

Wednesday, May 28th, 2008

Last year I was designing a wedding website for a friend of mine and came across TheThirdofJune.com. Yes, it's made of tables, but mainly it's a lot of javascript and the content is displayed in very unique and interesting way, particularly considering it's a website created to memorialize one day.

acrylic times rss reader

Tuesday, May 27th, 2008

I love my RSS reader. I have hundreds of blogs and news sites I regularly follow, so having an excellent RSS reader is crucial. Currently I use NetNewsWire, but I've been thinking of switching to Acrylic's Times. They have a completely new way of showing you RSS. Instead of an email-type box, it's similar to a browser window, and when you click a link, the top pages forward and you see the story behind it.

Right now I'm using it on their 15 day free trial (it's $30 after that), and so far, I love it.

etsy: dancesippydance's eugene

Monday, May 26th, 2008

I love everything about Etsy… the site is awesome, the people who sell on it are awesome and did I mention the site is awesome? There are thousands upon thousands of products, so they've provided numerous ways to search (aside from category), including by color, by location and by pounce (where you can look at undiscovered shops, or recent shops that have had a sale).

DanceSippyDance creates incredible little sculptures of monsters, and I adore them. I plan to buy Eugene the Scream, and that's the one I have bookmarked.

banana bungalow youth hostel

Friday, May 23rd, 2008

I love youth hostels. I've spent a lot of time traveling over the years and staying at hostels not only saved me money, it made me friends and helped plan future travel.

One of my favorite places is the Banana Bungalow Youth Hostel in San Diego. It's cheap, it's directly on the beach (in San Diego, which is freaking awesome) and the people are incredibly nice and friendly.

flashcomponents.net

Thursday, May 22nd, 2008

I love web design, but I'm not a big fan of Flash. Fortunately I've found FlashComponents.net, which has literally saved me.

Simple, un-expensive flash components to add to websites… that's why I saved this URL.

olson sundberg kundig allen architects: chicken point cabin

Wednesday, May 21st, 2008

I love Olson Sundberg Kundig Allen Architects. Their designs are inspired and unique, their website is hands-down fantastic (all CSS, not a table in sight) and I desperately want them to build my house.

Their Chicken Point Cabin is one of three homes that I've bookmarked. The home sits on a lake, and a glass wall (30 feet by 20 feet) opens with a pulley system, giving the entire home the feel of being outside.

The Olson Cabin is another favorite… evoking a treehouse in the woods.

perpetual kid online store

Tuesday, May 20th, 2008

Perpetual Kid is one of the greatest online gift sites I've ever found. I've bought gifts for my sister, my dad, my cousins, my coworkers and my boyfriend from this site for several years, and their product selection has only gotten better every year.

Sticky Set: Psycho? Perfect for my favorite coworker. To-do Tattoo? My boyfriend needs this product. Cool Shooters Ice Cube Shot Glasses… I bought this for my sister last year and she loves it. Perpetual Kid has something for everyone.

grezzo restaurant in boston

Monday, May 19th, 2008

I desperately want to go to this restaurant in Boston, but my boyfriend is less than enthused. Grezzo is a vegan, raw food restaurant in Boston, specializing in live food that is 100% organic and kept below 112 degrees.

Now I'm not looking to become a straight-up vegan (I'm pescetarian), but there's something quite fascinating about a restaurant (and a lifestyle) that is so strict, and yet so good. The day I can convince someone to come with me, I'll be eating at Grezzo.
