reed seifer's wish piece

Monday, June 23rd, 2008

Supermarket HQ (similar to Etsy), is a site that says, "Hi, we’re Supermarket.
We're here to connect you directly with designers and the great things they make." And they do.

Reed Seifer's Wish Piece was the first thing I bookmarked. Six matches, three each marked selfish and unselfish, meant for striking to grant wishes. I can't think of a person I wouldn't give these too as a gift.

james hook lobster company

Friday, May 30th, 2008

For over two decades my parents have been getting lobster from the James Hook Lobster Company in Boston. The lobsters are always fresh, the shipping fees are reasonable and we've never been disappointed.

Sadly, the James Hook Lobster Company burned to the ground this morning in Boston. The company, which has been around for almost 100 years, was a Boston landmark and I hope they get back on their feet very soon.

jeni's ice creams

Thursday, May 29th, 2008

In 2006 Daily Candy wrote about Jeni's Ice Creams located in Ohio. The list of interesting flavors caught my attention: organic dark cocoa gelato, Thai chili, candied beet with mascarpone, salty caramel… yum. All of them are made in small batches with all-natural ingredients.

My dad's big on ice cream, so I sent him the signature nine package, which includes those listed above, plus others like black coffee, queen city cayenne and a pear riesling sorbet. He absolutely loved it.

etsy: dancesippydance's eugene

I love everything about Etsy… the site is awesome, the people who sell on it are awesome and did I mention the site is awesome? There are thousands upon thousands of products, so they've provided numerous ways to search (aside from category), including by color, by location and by pounce (where you can look at undiscovered shops, or recent shops that have had a sale).

DanceSippyDance creates incredible little sculptures of monsters, and I adore them. I plan to buy Eugene the Scream, and that's the one I have bookmarked.

perpetual kid online store

Tuesday, May 20th, 2008

Perpetual Kid is one of the greatest online gift sites I've ever found. I've bought gifts for my sister, my dad, my cousins, my coworkers and my boyfriend from this site for several years, and their product selection has only gotten better every year.

Sticky Set: Psycho? Perfect for my favorite coworker. To-do Tattoo? My boyfriend needs this product. Cool Shooters Ice Cube Shot Glasses… I bought this for my sister last year and she loves it. Perpetual Kid has something for everyone.

catch a piece of maine

Thursday, May 8th, 2008

When I was a kid my dad's best friend (who lives in Boston) would send us a box of lobsters for New Year's Eve. We'd cook them up, dunk 'em in butter and ring in the new year totally sated. As I've gotten older (and moved to the East Coast) the novelty of lobster has worn off for me… but not for my mom. If she could eat lobster every week, I think she would.

So last year for her birthday I decided I'd send her lobsters. I shopped around and found a good deal (especially considering the overnight shipping), and I came across this site. It's called Catch a Piece of Maine, and for $2995 you get to own your own Maine lobster trap for a year. Yes, yes, it's insanely expensive (I'll get this for my mom when I earn a six figure salary, lol), but it's also incredibly cool. For the entire year you get all the lobsters that are caught in your trap, your own personal lobsterman, the ability to watch your trap online AND every time you get a shipment, they throw in a ton of other stuff, including mussels, steamers and dessert!

Not only are you directly supporting a Maine lobsterman, you're also supporting the Gulf of Maine Research Institute, as 10% of the proceeds go to them.

words for your walls

Tuesday, May 6th, 2008

When I first stumbled upon this website, I thought, "cool, what an awesome idea.. not only can I put this on my wall, I can give it as a gift!"

And then I couldn't figure out what words I wanted to put on my walls and realized if I couldn't figure it out for myself, how on Earth could I figure it out for someone else. Sad, I know. But I saved the URL because I know one day I'll think of something.

The art is "digitally cut, pre-spaced lettering that looks professionally hand-painted"—perfect for a stylish friend who has a favorite quote, saying or word.
